wiggly touch wheel plate? - tahnok - 2025-01-25

Hello,

Just opened my Tangara up today and I can sort of slide the fiberglass bit around and it's a bit distracting. Anyone else noticed this and tried to fix it? Maybe a tiny bit of tape?

Ah, you must have one of the ones we put together before we started putting a little tape under the touchwheel covers. Due to tolerance differences the covers aren't always a perfect fit, and we started pre-emptively applying tape to all units about halfway through. Sorry about that!

A little thin double sided tape between the faceplate and the touchwheel cover in the "cat ear" corners is what we do (we try keep it off the touch wheel circle itself to not mess with the sensitivity). It helps to use the front half of the case to get the alignment right. The method I use is place the double sided tape in the cat ears, put the touchwheel cover inside the front half of the case, then place the faceplate in so that they're both fitted correctly, and press gently to let the adhesive make contact with the faceplate.

Hope this helps!

We actually wrote up a small guide (with pictures!) for how to do this taping for someone who reached out for support a little while back: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lep2qfCyHx5KyUYVmZnVSkPldJlcOZoOUTd_yhX6oB8/edit?tab=t.0#heading=h.qgnr48101s5s

Apologies for this issue! We tried to catch it on units before they went out, but a few did slip by us.

Merci! I have some thin double sided tape somewhere from replacing my Nexus 5 screen that I can probably use for this

Does this affect some orders in Batch 1?

RE: wiggly touch wheel plate? - jacqueline - 2025-01-27

Yes, this should mostly just be an issue with a small number of devices from the early stages of batch 1. By the end of batch 1 we'd decided to just start taping down all touchwheel covers to be safe, and for batch 2 we've adjusted the size of the touchwheel covers to be slightly larger, which should hopefully lead to a more consistent fit.

Turns out I have organized the tape I thought I had and so now it's gone forever. Do you have the thickness or name of the 3M tape that you used?

RE: wiggly touch wheel plate? - jacqueline - 2025-01-29

We use a 3M double-sided tape that's ~0.1-0.2mm thick, and about 1cm wide. Unfortunately we do not actually know the part number for it, as there's no part number on it and we're pretty sure we were sent it by mistake (we've never been able to find a match in our order history!)

Got some of this double sided tape at Michael's in Canada and it worked great, no more wiggling!

Beautiful, so glad you were able to fix it up!

Thank you for that guide. I used double sided tape from TESA, but I do not know the thickness, since it is an old prototype. Works great.

I happened to have some 3M clear tape around and was actually able to dig up the ordering info.

3M 9088 High performance Acrylic Double Coated Tape - Heavy Duty Clear 0.25" x 5 yds

Just added some to my wheel plate and it seems to be holding great.

RE: wiggly touch wheel plate? - taivlam - 2025-02-02

BTW, an observation if you have a loose touchwheel plate: if I press strong enough down onto the touchwheel plate, I managed to push the plate past the "wall"/"perimeter" of the faceplate chassis, which ordinarily would help keep the touchwheel plate stationary.  I might be able to get a video of this (YouTube &/or PeerTube) later.

Some other things:
  1. Rather moot, though I think Jacqueline meant the supplier (such as DigiKey or Mouser) didn't have its own internal part number for the 3M double-sided tape, but somehow was also included in the shipping order.  Though it's interesting examine the reference sheet from 3M.
  2. I think my Tangara also has a slightly loose fitting for the touchwheel plate.  However, I will buy the double-sided tape soon to remedy this.
  3. This matters a lot more, as Tangara comes out-of-the-box with firmware v1.0.0 - in which any sliding of the touchwheel plate causes any control input to be extremely erratic and wonky, causing the currently selected option to seemingly jump all over the place.  Let this be an example to show that the Tangara firmware should be updated ASAP after receiving it, with your music on your (micro)SD card (so that the database can be initialized).

Apparently this is the Michael's USA page for the double-sided tape in your picture and it is the "permanent" version of the tape.

About 2 weeks ago, in a rush to get to my local Michael's before it closed, I only noticed I had bought the removable version after I returned home.

I believe the removable version will work, though I would surmise that the permanent version of the tape could also be removed if you really needed to.
