which memory cards are working for people? - PetitDebardeurRose - 2025-02-11

thought i'd start a thread of memory cards which seem to work good for Tangara

personally I don't have a recommendation other than to stay far away from getting a 1.5tb SanDisk Ultra microSD

RE: which memory cards are working for people? - hoogh0 - 2025-02-14

I'm currently using a SanDisk Ultra 80MB/s SDHC1 32GB that I pulled out of an old digital camera. Seems to be working fine so far.

Update: This didn't work later. https://forum.cooltech.zone/showthread.php?tid=139&pid=801#pid801

I've had no issues with SanDisk microSD. I bought a SanDisk 128GB Extreme 190MB/s from Amazon and it has been working fine so far with the included adapter.

I'm using this one: SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO. Appears to be working fine!

My original attempt was with a 256GB Samsung EVO Plus microSD card in a Samsung SD adapter, but that led to stuttering: https://codeberg.org/cool-tech-zone/tangara-fw/issues/159

Now I'm using a 128GB SanDisk Extreme PRO (full size) and it's been working fine.

Ive been having trouble with a samsung 256GB evo select microsd card. database refusing to index everything. gonna get a sandisk come payday.

SanDisk 256GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I

I really had to jam the cover on and it scraped off more plastic than I would have hoped.

I've had success with using Micro Center branded microSD cards in 128GB and 512GB capacities (though the actual usable capacities are much lower than the marketed nominal capacities), which I had figuratively lying around/microSD cards that I could repurpose.
  • My microSD cards have the following attributes: Class 10, U3, V30, A1.  (Reference.)
  • However, this is not being sold anymore. However, the currently available versions (such as this 512GB microSD card) have these attributes: Class 10, U3, V30, A2.  This is the version you should purchase, if you are buying new.

Due to comments from others, I'm not exactly jumping up and down with excitement to purchase a 1TB microSD card to test with Tangara.  (IIRC, flash devices sold under the Micro Center brand are "allegedly" "supposedly" rebranded lower quality units from Micron - but please correct me if I'm wrong.)  It will happen eventually, but I'm in no rush.

I transferred my music, and have observed that my current music collection is only slightly more than 11GB.

Tangent: I know it's an apples-to-orange comparison; but I wanted to demonstrate to myself that the incremental price markup for an internal storage increase in a current smartphones (e.g., any iPhone 16 series or Google Pixel 9 series device) - say even going from 256GB to 512GB, for example -is basically a ripoff compared to a similar 256GB to 512GB (micro)SD card upgrade for Tangara.

Well, this is the one I have in my Tangara and it seems to be working "fine"

At least I'm assuming its fine, I've been blaming the few crashes I had on trying to multitask with it while its checking the database on 200GB of music and podcasts I dumped into it right away.

Uh-oh. I think I spoke too soon...

I had been using a SanDisk Ultra 80MB/s SDHC1 32GB card, but last night I started getting a toooonnn of skipping.

My Tangara was fully charged and I was listening on wired headphones.

For some reason, this 1 specific FLAC song had a REALLY hard time playing. Pausing the song for a second and then resuming it helped it play for a few seconds uninterrupted, but very soon after heavy skipping started happening again.

I still have automatic database scans off.

I ended up buying a Samsung 128GB Pro Plus (for professionals) SDXC1 180MB/s reads and 130MB/s writes card. After copying stuff over to this card, the skipping is gone...

Not sure why that 1 specific FLAC file caused the Tangara to choke up on the old card...

Also, I believe I was using about 90% of the 32GB card's capacity. With the new card, my usage is down to about 50% of 128GB. Not sure if that matters.

I use a Kingston SDIT/32 and it has worked well so far. I will probably upgrade to the 64 GB version of this card if I run of of space on my current one.

thank you for posting this...I grabbed that Samsung 128GB Pro Plus (for professionals) you mentioned and its working so far...only have 30.6gbs put onto it at the moment, so fingers crossed if it will accept larger amounts in the future. still, this is so far working good from the get-go, which is more than I can say for the SanDisks i've used.

I was using a SAMSUNG EVO Plus Micro SDXC 512GB, which was not working.
I have switched to a SABRENT Rocket V60 512GB SD, which seems to have indexed my whole library correctly (though the SD card cover did bend the SD card a very scary amount). Time will tell if it plays things nicely!

Is the Sabrent still playing nice for you? I need to pick up a card for mine in the 256GB - 512GB range and it seems to have been a very mixed bag for folks

RE: which memory cards are working for people? - Be - 2025-04-05

I have implemented readahead buffering in https://codeberg.org/cool-tech-zone/tangara-fw/pulls/308. This should resolve stuttering for most SD cards. If you have an SD card that stutters with Tangara, I'd appreciate if you could test that pull request for a few hours of playback (stuttering might not show up right away).

After weeks of experimentation and investigation, I have come to the unfortunate conclusion that the combination of some SD cards and the Tangara hardware is just cursed and will never work without stuttering. I wrote a summary of my investigations on the bug tracker. TL;DR: if https://codeberg.org/cool-tech-zone/tangara-fw/pulls/308 doesn't fix stuttering for you, you probably just need a different SD card. It doesn't have to be the most expensive SD card with the fastest advertised speeds because Tangara doesn't come close to those speeds by 5 orders of magnitude. For me the problematic card is a Microcenter brand 512 GB card that I got several years ago. So my advice for buying an SD card for Tangara is just find one at a decent price that isn't some sketchy unbranded too-cheap-to-be-true thing.

I have had success with the PNY PRO Elite Class 10 U3 V30 256GB. I just used the reddti dashcam buying guide and got the first one I could find that was full size.

RE: which memory cards are working for people? - scorey - 2025-04-07

I just got my Tangara and was eager to try it out. The only SD cards I had on hand were a couple of Eastbull 2 GB cards. I had needed 2 GB capacity for another device, so I picked up a bunch from the only company I could find that offered that low of capacity.

They came formatted as FAT16, I put one in my laptop SD reader and copied over some ogg files. Put the card in Tangara and initially it seemed ok. It said indexing and then I tried playing a track. No sound. Did a hard reset and then Tangara said 'SD Card is not inserted or could not be opened.'

Took out the card, put it back in laptop, formatted it as FAT32. Copied some ogg files plus some 24/96 flac files and put it back in Tangara. This time all is well as far as I can tell, including the 24/96 flac files.

Is there a known problem with FAT16?
