I think you want to just build the stuff in data/.

It was helpful, thanks! You made me remember that I can just pull both the .desktop file and icons directly from the data folder by using the desktop.eclass’ domenu and doicon functions (well, in this paticular case the newicon function, because I need to change the icons’ filenames).
