A trip with Tangara
#3
I've seen a lot of the same things.  I thought I'd post links to the tracking issues, in case you want to add your experiences, follow any progress, or thumbs-up the issues.

This issue involves a Bluetooth disconnect, but may not be quite the same: https://codeberg.org/cool-tech-zone/tang...issues/140

This issue might be related, and mentions auto-reconnect as not a thing yet, but it was closed: https://codeberg.org/cool-tech-zone/tang.../issues/92

(2025-01-15, 10:11 AM)deshipu Wrote: They would also disconnect if there was no music for several seconds (for example if I paused the music to hear announcements).

I wonder if this is related to the Tangara going idle too quickly: https://codeberg.org/cool-tech-zone/tang...issues/137

That timeout has since been extended to 2 minutes (https://codeberg.org/cool-tech-zone/tang.../pulls/175) but it's not a full solution.

There's an occasional crash when toggling Bluetooth: https://codeberg.org/cool-tech-zone/tang...issues/139

I haven't seen an issue for this one.  It'd be worth creating an issue, I think, though I'm not sure if it'd be a software issue or a limitation with the Tangara amplifier.

(2025-01-15, 10:11 AM)deshipu Wrote: I normally have my music sorted into subdirectories, and I pick one directory to play at a time. This doesn't work with Tangara, because while I can browse the files, and play an individual file, it doesn't automatically play the next file in the directory, like all other players that I have used do. There is also no "play all" button in the directory browser, like there is for the database browser.

Issue to play all files in a folder: https://codeberg.org/cool-tech-zone/tang...issues/124

(2025-01-15, 10:11 AM)deshipu Wrote: I'm also missing a "go to the next directory" button.

I don't think there's an issue for this specifically, but with https://codeberg.org/cool-tech-zone/tang...issues/169 it'd be easier to go to the current location, for picking another album/track by the same artist.  I agree that it's hard to get to the next artist, because it often requires scrolling through the full collection to get back to the same general location.

(2025-01-15, 10:11 AM)deshipu Wrote: So I was forced to use the database browser, but since I had to move between the settings and the browser so often, I ended up only listening to albums that start with the letter A, because scrolling down the list was just too fiddly.

Issue here for improving scrolling in long lists: https://codeberg.org/cool-tech-zone/tang...issues/117

(2025-01-15, 10:11 AM)deshipu Wrote: If I tried to scroll too fast, it would often click by mistake or exit the browser, and I would need to start from the beginning.

I think this is two issues in one.  First is that the back and now-playing shortcuts (holding left or right on the touchwheel) can activate when you are in fact just trying to scroll slowly/carefully with the touchwheel.  I'm not sure how to solve that other than disabling those features, unfortunately.  There are a couple issues about customizing control schemes, but they've both been closed.
https://codeberg.org/cool-tech-zone/tangara-fw/issues/9
https://codeberg.org/cool-tech-zone/tang.../issues/43

The result was that you can do some customization of controls via a `config.lua` file on your SD card, but it's not documented yet.

The second is the "click by mistake" part, which happens to me too, but it's hard for me to describe in a way that seems useful for filing an issue.  If I'm not using firm enough pressure on the touchwheel (more than I'd like) I think that it believes I let go.  That can lead to the left/right long-press shortcuts activating and taking me to another screen, losing all of my hard-won scrolling progress.  Or the up/down long-press shortcuts can activate, starting the quick-scroll feature, taking me away from where I was; not as bad as left/right, but still annoying.

This issue is for letting the user choose indexes, e.g. only using album-based indexes: https://codeberg.org/cool-tech-zone/tang...issues/108

(2025-01-15, 10:11 AM)deshipu Wrote: It was impossible to operate the player without looking at the screen, which is a big step back from my previous player.

I can see a couple ways around this.  First is using the button-style control scheme rather than wheel-based, so you can know (without looking) how many times you've pressed and therefore what control you should be on.  Not great, but a little more usable than the wheel without looking...

Some people are talking about a faceplate with more buttons instead of a wheel, if you want to take that idea further: https://forum.cooltech.zone/showthread.php?tid=29

Another way is with TTS support, having the Tangara speak what control it's on, so you don't have to look.  Some support is already in the firmware, but no voice yet; there are a couple issues:
https://codeberg.org/cool-tech-zone/tang.../issues/19
https://codeberg.org/cool-tech-zone/tang.../issues/20

For me, the most important thing I'd like to do without looking is play/pause.  There's some disagreement about how to activate that; personally I'd like it to happen when pressing volume up+down simultaneously, because you wouldn't have to look.
