Stuck on white screen (resolved)
#1
I've been playing some music on the new Tangara. Sounded great and all going well but now I think it's somehow bricked or stuck in a weird loop. The symptom I'm getting is a white screen. Stuff I have tried:

1. Hard reset with volume buttons and lock switch
2. Flashed latest firmware with Tangara companion (reported success)
3. 'esptool.py run' results were:

esptool.py v4.8.1
Found 1 serial ports
Serial port /dev/cu.usbmodem201
Connecting.....
Detecting chip type... Unsupported detection protocol, switching and trying again...
Connecting......
Detecting chip type... ESP32
Chip is ESP32-D0WD-V3 (revision v3.0)
Features: WiFi, BT, Dual Core, 240MHz, VRef calibration in efuse, Coding Scheme None
Crystal is 40MHz
MAC: 24:4c:ab:10:04:ec
Uploading stub...
Running stub...
Stub running...
Hard resetting via RTS pin...

In all cases the screen goes black, then white, then after a second there are two short vibrations. I think it might actually be working except for the display behaviour.

Any ideas?

That sounds like it could be hardware related, especially if flashing the firmware hasn't changed it. It sounds like maybe an issue with the screen, though it sounds like it was initially working ok? If you're comfortable opening the device, you could check the faceplate cable is connected correctly, and that the haptic motor hasn't come loose. It might also help to unplug the tangara from any power source, switch it into the locked position, and let it sit for 10 minutes or so to make sure it enters the low power state, and then try turning it on again. Let me know if that helps, if not feel free to email support@cooltech.zone and we can organise a replacement faceplate if needed.

Thanks, this is very helpful! It was able to recover after 10 minutes unplugged. If I insert my SD card I get the white screen behaviour again, so it's likely the card rather than the device itself.

After much checking it looks like the card had the physical write lock on -- not sure how I managed that. Unlocking the card and trying again got me past the white screen. I'll log an enhancement request on Codeberg for Tangara to display an error message in this case ("hey silly, you locked the card, unlock it to play music again").
